ISI online short-term program/COIL “Conflict and Memory” Dec.21,2023

School of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation (ISI) online short-term program /COIL "Conflict and Memory: Faith, Exclusion and Reintegration" was held for 8 days from Wednesday, October 4, 2023 to Wednesday, November 22, 2023. This program was a joint academic program with Prof. Johan Lauwereyns, Kyushu University, and Prof. Glenn Timmermans, University of Macau. Faculty members from Johannesburg Holocaust & GenocideCentre (JHGC), Pennsylvania State University, and Seinan Gakuin University also collaborated on the program.

Focusing on the Holocaust, the genocide in Rwanda, and other atrocities such as ethnic cleansing and genocide as case studies, the program aimed to share with students a basic knowledge about these historical events from a variety of methodological perspectives and provided them intellectual exchange opportunities through group work and discussion. One of the greatest attractions of this program was the opportunity to hear the personal stories of Holocaust survivors and students could gain valuable experience.

A total of 46 students, including 29 from Kyushu University, participated in the program. The students communicated with each other in English, and deepened their learning and exchange. A student commented “I keenly felt my lack of English proficiency and the high level of critical thinking and English proficiency of students from overseas. I felt that I must practice developing critical thinking and expressing my opinions in English in my daily classes.”
