The school of ISI organized the short-term study abroad "COOL Program" again in AY2025! Mar.31,2026

Last academic year, ISI implemented its first school-organized short-term study abroad, the COOL Program.
Building on that success, we were pleased to offer the program again this academic year in collaboration with the following two partner universities!

The COOL (Collaborative Online-Onsite Learning) Program is the school’s unique short‑term study abroad program, which combines COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) — an online format for international collaborative learning — with onsite study abroad experiences.
By deepening students’ understanding of the program theme and fostering relationships with partner‑university students and faculty prior to travel, the program enables richer learning and smoother collaboration during the onsite component, which is one of its major strengths.

Participants shared positive feedback such as, “There were plenty of opportunities to interact with local professors and students. Despite the short duration, it was a stimulating experience surrounded by different cultures and languages.”, and “The program offered a good balance between allowing students to create their own plans and providing appropriate and timely support from faculty.”

In the program with Pukyong National University (PKNU), eleven ISI students were dispatched to the College of Environmental and Marine Science and Technology, where they were each assigned to one of ten research laboratories. They conducted joint research and internship activities with supervising professors and graduate students in their respective labs and also participated in field training, including visits to PKNU’s Fisheries Science Research Institute, its training vessel, and its exploration ship. In addition, they engaged in cultural exchange activities by visiting local attractions in Busan, Gyeongju, and other areas. The program has attracted significant attention, being featured by 16 local media outlets this year. It continues to play a highly significant role in further strengthening the partnership between our universities.

In the program with National Taiwan University (NTU) participants were divided into small groups and took a proactive role by designing every aspect of their projects—from setting the themes to planning the progression of their work. This year, in addition to Kyushu University students carrying out onsite study in Taipei, we also welcomed NTU students to Japan for the final presentation session. This strengthened the overall cohesion of the program and further enhanced cross-cultural exchange.
