ADMISSION

Entrance Examinations

ISI is committed to switching from entrance examinations that test knowledge to entrance examinations that identify abilities. To ensure that it selects a variety of students, equipped not solely with knowledge and skills, but also the ability to think, make judgments, and express themselves, as well as initiative, diversity, and the ability to work as part of a team, ISI conducts four types of entrance examination: Comprehensive Admission, Recommendation-Based Admission, General Admission, and International Admission. All candidates, regardless of which admission system they choose, are required to submit a Statement of Motivation that includes their vision for learning if admitted. This section explains the international admission system.

International Admission System

We have put in place admission systems for students educated overseas and for privately funded international students (for April entry and October entry). Under the admission system for students educated overseas, the requirement for the Common Test for University Admissions is waived, in recognition of the study situation overseas, but candidates applying under this system are required to sit the university’s own academic achievement tests in mathematics and English, and are assessed on the basis of whether or not they have the basic academic skills required to study at ISI. We evaluate the interview and the Statement of Motivation and other application documents in light of the perspective described in the section “What Kind of Students Are We Seeking?” and make the decision on admission based on a comprehensive assessment of all these things. Under the admission system for privately funded international students (for April entry and October entry), candidates are required to submit their score from the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students, to enable us to assess whether or not they have the basic academic skills required to study at ISI. We evaluate the interview and the Statement of Motivation and other application documents in light of the perspective described in the section “What Kind of Students Are We Seeking?”
