ISI online short-term program/COIL “Culture, Heritage, and Identity” Dec.21,2023

The School of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation Online Short-Term Program /I-COIL "Identity and Tradition: Japan in Asia" was held for eight days from Wednesday, October 4 to Wednesday, November 29, 2023. This program was organized by Lecturer David Weiss (ISI) in collaboration with Professor Bui Thanh Huong (Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University/APU) and was held for the second time this year.

The program focused on the construction of identity and tradition in Japan and Asia, and aimed to broaden students' understanding of the invention and expression of cultural identity and tradition in contemporary society.

A total of 26 students, 13 from APU and 13 from Kyushu University, participated in the program. After lectures by Lecturer Weiss and Professor Bui, students from both universities formed mixed groups, worked in groups, and concluded the program with a final presentation.

This was the second consecutive year that faculty member Weiss has presented this program, which was very well received. We’ve got a comment from a student who participated in this class as follows: The class was very interesting in thinking about Japanese identity and traditions, and I would like to take more classes that consider various cultures.

The class was conducted online via Zoom.
